Cook Island Language Week

Today we had Tuakana/Teina time with our buddy class Room 8 and we made Cook Island 'ei's! An 'Ei is a floral headband or necklace that is usually worn during celebrations. We made the headband kind. Our buddies helped us decorate flowers and glue them onto our headpieces. We love tuakana/teina time!

We also had buddy time with Room 8 this week and we made a Siapo together. A Siapo is a traditional fabric of Samoa. We looked at different Pasifika artwork and patterns to get lots of ideas and our Room 8 buddies helped us with our art. We used vivid, red dye, brown paint and crayons.

Picking up rubbish at the creek

We went back to the creek with our buddy class and this time we went to clean up the creek and pick up some rubbish because when we went last time we saw lots of rubbish.

Before we went we tried to guess what kind of rubbish we thought we would find the most of. Then we went to the creek and picked up all the rubbish we could find.

Then we went back to school and sorted our rubbish into plastic, food, food wrappers, glass and other. We counted them all and our buddies showed us how to make tally marks to show how many of each thing we found.

Creek Visit

This term our Inquiry is Te Taiao o Tamaki which means The Environment of Tamaki. We have been learning about the environment. The evironment is everything around us. This week we went to our local creek with our buddy class.

We saw lots of different things and our buddies looked after us and told us about pollution, which is when things that are not good for the environment is in the environment. We walked around the creek and talked about things we could see, hear, feel and smell. We also saw some rubbish and Miss Park found a driver's licence! We decided to come back and pick up some rubbish next time.

We have been writing recounts for writing and we wrote about our creek visit. Here is some of our recounts about going to the creek.
